Our Office

Our office was founded in 1977 as the first patent attorneys' office in Neuss by Patent Attorney Paul. In 1996 Patent Attorney Paul and Patent Attorney Albrecht joined forces to form the Paul & Albrecht Patentanwaltssozietät. Currently four patent attorneys are working for our office (see "our team").

Since January 1, 2009 there is a close co-operation with the office Schröter & Albrecht Patentanwälte in Iserlohn, which has also been existing for more than 30 years. The co-operation gives us even more flexibility in handling our mandates.

First and foremost we look after small and medium-sized companies. However, our office is also held in high regard by a number of large companies with which we regularly work. Our clients are distributed all over Germany and are also located in neighbouring foreign countries. Moreover, we represent clients especially from the USA, Japan and China, but also from Sweden, France and Italy. By means of our appropriate admittance we can represent our clients directly before the German Patent and Trademark Office, the European Patent Office and the Office for Harmonisation (responsible for EU trademarks and EU design patents). When representing our clients before national patent offices in foreign countries we co-operate with a network of offices of foreign colleagues of which we know, upon the basis of many years collaboration, that they understand their business and that they will do so at moderate cost.

Due to the composition of the staff of our office, we are in a position to advise and represent our clients in the field of industrial property rights in all areas of technology and science with the exception of plant protection in the following areas of law:

  • patent and utility model protection,
  • protection of marks (trademarks, firmnames, titles, domain names),
  • design patent protection,
  • product piracy,
  • law of contract.

Details can be found under the link "Fields of activity".

We are accommodated in large and modern office spaces in which we can offer our clients a pleasant environment for meetings and presentations. Opposite the entrance to our office we keep a number of parking spaces free for our visitors. Our staff members have work stations equipped with the latest technology. As assistance we have a library with extensive technical literature and with practically all publications, in the respectively most recent editions - including of scientific nature - from all the legal fields with which we deal. This enables us, when dealing with legal problems, in particular expert opinions, to take into consideration, comprehensively, all of the relevant legal opinions and decisions.

Of particular note is security. Our office is extensively protected by the alarm system of the Bürgschaftsbank with monitoring by a security company, and our internal data network has no physical link to our Internet work stations.

It is our work philosophy to offer our clients an individually tailored and integrated service over the whole breadth of legal protection of intellectual property in a prompt and quality conscious manner. Urgend matters are dealt with urgently, although we strive to avoid sacrificing quality to urgency.

In all of the above we also keep an eye on costs, that is to say fees. Upon the basis of our favourable costing situation we are able to offer our services at competitive rates. Moreover, we continuously strive to find ways of reducing costs. We were therefore one of the first offices to pay the annuity fees for foreign country patents as far as possible by means of a co-operative set up for this purpose, and so very cost-effectively for our clients. Meanwhile, we pay the annuity fees at some foreign patent offices ourselves by means of which the costs can be further reduced. With the validation of European patents, i.e. the submission of translations to the national patent offices, we exhaust the possibility of direct submission wherever possible, so that costs are saved to a large extent. When choosing the patent atterneys and lawyers to work with us, not only do we consider quality, but also that their services are offered at moderate rates.

As regards the composition of the staff at our office we have decided against the current trend of employing lawyers in patent attorneys' offices and so also of offering services in legal fields from which patent attorneys are barred due to the Patent Attorneys' Act. We prefer - and have good experiences of having done so - to call upon an external lawyer who is a specialist in and recognized in the respective legal matter in question as required, i.e. in particular regarding the infringement of industrial property rights. We are constantly working with a number of lawyer offices which are outstanding due to their experience in industrial property rights and therefore guarantee our clients the best advice and enforcement of their rights. Needless to say we also gladly co-operate with lawyer offices which are the in-house lawyers of our clients or are recommended by the latter.
